That's a moment I call my "d'oh!" moments.
Asher was going through a rough time last week. Tantrums like I have never seen. Really bad stuff, for him. I was in despair assuming it was a regression of some sort. I was thinking...what in his diet do I need to change?, could this lead to meds?, will he hurt himself/others? You know when you start freaking out?
I discussed it with my husband, the doctor... He freaked out with me.
Then my babysitter commented, "Boy he has terrible allergies. We were out walking and his eyes started watering and got swollen. He must have a terrible headache".
Yes, my son has seasonal allergies. Gets them every year. Mother and father (doctor!) of the year. We forgot.
Gave him some Allegra and he is fine.
Singulair, too, worked great for my ds' allergies. And it doesn't make himHere too! Doc said Claritin ... every day ... for the next 5-6 weeks, whether or not he seems like he needs it.
I think this is a good time to remind EVERYONE that kids with ASD tend to be more prone to allergies and that this time of year is the WORST for allergies. If you see dark circles under your child's eyes, take him to the pediatrician and seen if an RX for Singulair or something else like that might help. My son had to get pneumonia two years in a row at this time of year for anyone (including doctors) to notice that he had bad postnasal drip and was getting aspirational pneumonia. That was 10 years ago, he's been on Singulair ever since, and he's NEVER sick. ALso, we need to be aware of Seasonal Affective Disorder during winter. My son doesn't have this, but lots of ASD kids do. Believe me, you're not alone in overlooking the obvious.
